As in a please-dear-god-don’t-ever-let-a-stranger-see-what’s-lurking-on-my-Kindle amount of romance. I want to be the type of reader who keeps her shelves stocked with high-brow classics and contemporary literature found in yearly Top 10 lists - I do! I swear! - and yet throughout the pandemic, I’ve gone from reading mostly thrillers and award-winning adult fiction to a truly astounding amount of romance. There’s almost a giddy shame in the purchase of books like these - we all know they’re the literary equivalent of cotton candy, something delicious to be devoured quickly, though not exactly something we want to brag about. ![]() (Or….something.) Instead they crash land on a Hoth-like planet populated by big blue dudes with tails and on their which they use to. She’s a typical teenage girl, with a few close friends and a bit of an attitude to spare. As you’d expect, the main character is Selina Kyle, who is cast as a high school student rather than a world-class thief. The book is divided into three separate acts– “The Dark,” “The Light,” and “Under the Bright White Moon”– with each section containing its own sub-chapters. The real disconnect here is the treatment of some of the subject matter, along with some truly odd storytelling choices. But I wasn’t the target audience for Mera: Tidebreaker either, and I still found quite a bit to enjoy there. With a target audience of teens, especially those who are “troubled” or feel misunderstood or outcast, it has elements that will no doubt resonate. ![]() Now, granted, I am not the target audience for this story, in… many ways. The intentions are noble and there are moments of individual greatness, but as a whole, this is a flawed work. ![]() It’s also a difficult book because, at least as a work of art, it doesn’t quite succeed. Those subjects are not easy to read, and they certainly can’t be easy to write. ![]() It is a difficult book.įor one, it is difficult due to the hard, heavy subject matter, which includes domestic abuse, self-harm, and child runaways. And since buying the first in the series, we’ve since invested in a couple more, namely Angelina’s Birthday, which we gave Miss E on her birthday, and Angelina and the Princess. Now more than 30 years old, the book is utterly charming and beautiful. I didn’t own it as a child, but I remember seeing it at friends’ houses and loving the look of the little dancing mouse. The first book that came to mind was Angelina Ballerina by Katharine Holabird. ![]() Just before she started lessons, we were keen to buy her some books so she could learn more about what ballet entailed and what she could expect from the class. She loves dancing and wearing her little ballerina costume, and it’s been amazing to see her progress over the last two and a half years. Little Miss E has been going to ballet classes since she was three years old. ![]() ![]() A lot is happening in some of those more action-packed scenes, but they do not lack for detail. By bringing all these fantastical elements together, Armentrout gives readers a high tension, fast-paced story that glues the reader to the pages. It is still reminiscent of Gargoyles but in such a fresh and inventive way. It delves into the past of the demons, the angels, and the gargoyles interestingly and uniquely. The novel has been variously adapted into a play, a film, and a television miniseries. This is put against Miss Brodie's two romances - with Mr Lowther, Marcia Blaine's singing master, a church elder and bachelor and Mr Lloyd, the school's art master, a married Roman Catholic with several children - as well as the attempts of the school's headmistress, Miss Mackay, to remove Brodie from her post. Set at Edinburgh's conservative Marcia Blaine School for Girls in the 1930s, the novel deals with the eponymous schoolteacher and her 'set', whose futures and loyalties she seeks to influence along Calvinist (and, increasingly, Fascist) lines. ![]() First published in 1961, The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie is probably the best-known novel by the Scottish author Muriel Spark. ![]() ![]() ![]() An important audience for the book would be indigenous academics and researchers who may be developing indigenous research agendas, methodologies and protocols. ![]() ![]() ![]() In a sense this review has a very "ethnocentric" focus. In particular, what a non-indigenous researcher needs to be aware of when researching with indigenous peoples how non-indigenous researchers can improve their practices with indigenous peoples and, most fundamentally, whether it is appropriate for non-indigenous researchers to be involved in research with indigenous peoples. This review focuses on how Tuhiwai Smith's book can inform non-indigenous researchers who may be involved in research initiatives with indigenous communities. According to Tuhiwai Smith, "decolonization" is concerned with having "a more critical understanding of the underlying assumptions, motivations and values that inform research practices". Tuhiwai Smith's book challenges traditional Western ways of knowing and researching and calls for the "decolonization" of methodologies, and for a new agenda of indigenous research. This line, from the introduction to Linda Tuhiwai Smith's book Decolonizing Methodologies, sets the scene for an extensive critique of Western paradigms of research and knowledge from the position of an indigenous and "colonised" Maori woman. "Research" is probably one of the dirtiest words in the indigenous world's vocabulary. By Linda Tuhiwai Smith, 1999, Zed Books, London ![]() |
